Well it's been one hell of a year starting with the fires and finishing up with frenetic of what was the launch of our first single malt release called I AM... . As we say it's all in our logo , it's the journey and as we take a slight pause to reflect, we do see some worrying signs ahead in our small craft spirits industry as the big end of town flex their muscles with a new Australian patent taken out that potentially will restrict how we make our whisky.
At Craft Works Distillery we have stated publicly right from the start 3 years ago , that our whisky is based off a stout beer mash bill recipe and it's rather an interesting approach that we believe enables us to make young complex whisky. Well a Goliath of the local industry feels the same I guess as they have taking out a patent that potentially restricts other Australian distillers from using two or more roasted malts. Funny that , stout based mash bills use roasted malts , so as you can imagine, cause for concern.
The largest representative body for distillers in Australia the Australian Distillers Association (ADA) has enough concerns they have enlisted a patent lawyer to advise so I guess we wait to see what unfolds from here.
